The summer months can be a difficult time to save money for many people, especially when each month seems to be full of endless activities, events, and gatherings. Knowing that summer is right around the corner is all the more reason to practice mindful spending and designate a budget for yourself. A general budgeting rule of thumb is to put aside about 20-30% from each paycheck per month to pay for entertainment, leisure, and lifestyle expenses.
Not only is walking completely free, it’s great exercise and a perfect way to get out of the house. Pack some food and take a stroll to your favorite park, trail, or outdoor area. Take in the warm sun on your skin, enjoy the fragrance of fresh cut grass and flowers, and celebrate saving money this summer!
Instead of spending money at a restaurant, consider hosting friends and family at your house for a backyard potluck. Tell each person to bring something delicious to share. Having a potluck is not only an inexpensive summer idea, it’s a great way to spend time with people you love and care about!
If you’re a fan of the outdoors, spend a day or weekend at a state park. Check out some biking paths or bring your hiking boots for the trails. Consider booking a campsite and spend a weekend roasting marshmallows, stargazing, and telling campfire stories! Don’t feel like driving? Camping in your backyard is a fun and convenient alternative.
Local festivals and fairs are extremely common during the summer months, and the best part is there’s usually no fee to enter! Although you may have to pay for additional activities or food, it’s entertaining to walk around and see events offered right in your community.
